“Ceylon Tea” promoted at Darwin College, Cambridge University- UK

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in London, jointly with the Darwin College Tea Society of Cambridge University and the International Tea Committee (ITC) in the UK, conducted a Ceylon Tea Tasting and awareness session on 01st March 2025 at the historic Darwin Hall of the Darwin College. The programme was held under the theme of the Darwin College Tea Society, titled ‘Travel with Tea’ and as a part of its annual cultural promotion activities. Ms. Agustina Villalba, the President of the Darwin College Tea Society, together with her Treasurer Mr. Kui Li, worked closely with Mr. Somasena Mahadiulwewa, Minister (Commercial) of Sri Lanka High Commission and Mr. Suranga James Perea, Executive Director of the ITC-UK to organize this tea tasting evening.

Mr. Perera, who is also a professional tea taster and tea tutor at the UK Tea Academy with a wealth of experience in the Ceylon tea trade and tea tasting, having his career track records with leading tea brokers and as the CEO of the Ceylon Tea Brokers in 2010, conducted the tasting session which was attended by around 35 participants, majority of whom are post graduate students of the Cambridge University. The programe included a presentation conducted by Mr. Perera, displaying of Ceylon Tea videos of Sri Lanka Tea Board, servicing 04 varieties of specialty Ceylon teas with Sri Lankan ginger cookies and other snacks and flavours.

During the session, participants as fellow tea lovers, explored the rich history and diversity with 07 Region Teas and related flavors of Ceylon tea, also with its overall industry and economic aspects, cultural significance and the health benefits of tea. Participants enjoyed tasting the exquisite Ceylon teas whilst having vibrant discussions about the art of professional tea brewing and the subtleties that make each cup unique Ceylon Tea. The participants expressed that it was a rich and eye-opening experience for them who have come from different parts of the world, for various study programmes at the Cambridge University
