High Commissioner Rohitha Bogollagama discusses future trajectory of Sri Lanka – UK relations with the Lord Speaker McFall

His Excellency Rohitha Bogollagama, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the UK, had a fruitful meeting today, 23 January 2024, with The Rt Hon. the Lord McFall of Alcluith, the Lord Speaker of the UK Parliament. The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, and its future trajectory.

During the meeting, the High Commissioner and Lord Speaker McFall discussed a wide array of topics covering contemporary international relations, the reconciliation process in Sri Lanka, and the enhancement of bilateral relations. His Excellency, the High Commissioner, briefed the Lord Speaker on Sri Lanka’s constitutional reforms and the role of China in Sri Lanka. The exchange of ideas and perspectives aimed to foster greater understanding and cooperation in the Sri Lanka-UK relationship.

Both dignitaries acknowledged the historical ties between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom and expressed their commitment to deepening the parliamentary connections. They emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue in addressing shared challenges and building stronger diplomatic bonds.

HE Rohitha Bogollagama shared with the Lord Speaker, his priorities for forging greater relations with the UK during his tenure as High Commissioner. He emphasised to the Lord Speaker that the UK should engage bilaterally on matters pertaining to Sri Lanka, which would provide greater understanding of domestic issues, rather than addressing such matters through multilateral fora.

This meeting is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Sri Lanka High Commission to foster robust relations between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom across various spheres.
