The High Commission engaged with the Sri Lankan community in the United Kingdom to explore avenues for effective collaboration in disaster relief and rebuilding efforts in Sri Lanka

Following the meeting held on Sunday, 30 November 2025, to coordinate collective disaster relief support for communities devastated by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka, the High Commission organized a discussion with the Sri Lankan community in the United Kingdom on Saturday, 6 December 2025 at 10.00 am.

The discussions focused on working through mechanisms established by the Government of Sri Lanka to supply essential requirements to affected communities as an immediate measure of relief, while also raising funds for rebuilding efforts as a mid  to long-term strategy. The importance of financial donations through government designated channels was emphasized, as it ensures transparency and proper allocation of resources in accordance with the requirements identified by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The High Commission was briefed on both individual and collective fundraising initiatives undertaken by the community. In addition to monetary contributions, a significant quantity of relief materials had been collected by community organizations, religious institutions, and individuals to be sent to Sri Lanka. Several innovative fundraising activities were also organized to sustain support for the cause.

High Commissioner Nimal Senadheera praised the commitment of the Sri Lankan community in the UK and highlighted the importance of channelling funds and relief materials through official government mechanisms to ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable. Quoting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, he underscored the value of unity among Sri Lankans in rebuilding the nation stronger than before. He further informed participants that a framework for improved coordination and collaboration, which will operate under the supervision of the High Commission is under consideration.

A highlight of the meeting was the active participation of Sri Lankan youth including university students and young professionals in the UK, who shared innovative ideas to enhance relief efforts. The High Commissioner commended their dedication and expressed readiness to work closely with them in future initiatives related to rebuilding efforts.
