Ceremonial Commencement of Duties 2026

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in London commenced its official duties for the year 2026 on 01 January 2026, in line with government directives on New Year work arrangements for public institutions.

The official proceedings commenced with the playing of the national anthem followed by the observance of silence in remembrance of members of the Tri-Forces and others who gave their lives in service to the nation. Staff members then took the Public Service Oath, reaffirming their commitment to unity, accountability, and resilience in line with the Government’s vision of “a thriving country and a beautiful life”.

High Commissioner Nimal Senadheera then addressed the staff, highlighting the importance of good work ethics, accountability, professionalism, and cooperation, and encouraged a positive, forward-looking approach to serving Sri Lankans in the United Kingdom.

Following the official proceedings, The High Commissioner and the staff attended a Pirith chanting programme held at the London Buddhist Vihara to invoke blessings on the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, led by Most Ven Bogoda Seelavimala Thero, Chief Incumbent of London Buddhist Vihara and Chief Sangha Nayake of Great Britain. A donation of GBP 5000 as disaster relief arranged by the temple was presented to the High Commissioner at the end of the pirith chanting programme.

The High Commissioner and the Deputy High Commissioner also attended a similar religious ceremony at the Kingsbury Temple.
