Repatriation Human Remains to Sri Lanka

If the deceased person was a Sri Lankan National following documents should be certified from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and legalised from Sri Lanka High Commission. 

  • Death Certificate
  • Coroner’s Certificate/ Post-mortem Certificate
  • No Infection Certificate
  • Embalming Certificate
  • Original current Sri Lankan passport with visa status   : Foreign & Commonwealth Office certification is not applicable
  • Flight Details   : Foreign & Commonwealth Office certification is not applicable.

If the deceased person is an Ex-Sri Lankan, the following procedure should be followed and the below mentioned documents, certified by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office should be submitted to legalised from the Sri Lanka High Commission. 

  • Next of Kin – Nominate a representative in Sri Lanka who takes responsibility of the funeral arrangements and to obtain approval from Department of Immigration & Emigration in Colombo to repatriate the human remains.
  • Consent Letter from Next of Kin.
  • Flight Details
  • Approval from country of current nationality of deceased person   :  Foreign &Commonwealth Office certification is applicable
  • Cancelled current passport  : Foreign &Commonwealth Office certification is applicable.
  • Death Certificate : Foreign &Commonwealth Office certification is applicable.
  • Coroner’s Certificate/ Post-mortem Certificate   : Foreign &Commonwealth Office certification is applicable.
  • Embalming Certificate  : Foreign &Commonwealth Office certification is applicable

 

Cremated Remains (Ashes):

If you wish to take cremated remains to Sri-Lanka, please ensure you have the following documents.

  • Sri Lankan death certificate registered and issued by the High Commission or

*      Local death certificate

*      Cremation certificate

  • Acceptance letter from the relevant cemetery where the ashes to be laid- if necessary.

* Please note: Death & Cremation Certificates should be certified by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Sri Lanka High Commission in London.

Further to this, you should check with the airline and airport(s), which you will be travelling through, for their requirements.
