London Buddhist Vihara Holds a Transference of Merit Ceremony to Mark Sri Lanka’s Independence Day

The London Buddhist Vihara hosted a Transference of Merit Ceremony on 4 February 2025 in commemoration of Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day. The event was led by the Most Venerable Bogoda Seelawimala Thero, Chief Sangha Nayake of Great Britain and Chief Incumbent of the London Buddhist Vihara.

The ceremony paid tribute to the fallen heroes of Sri Lanka’s independence struggle, as well as the Tri-Forces and the Police who have served the nation with dedication. The religious observances invoked blessings for the prosperity of Sri Lanka and the well-being of its people.

The event was attended by officials at the High Commission of Sri Lanka, trustees of the Vihara, and well-wishers.

The London Buddhist Vihara, the oldest Theravada temple in Britain, continues to serve as a centre for religious and cultural engagement for Buddhists in the UK.
