High Commissioner – designate Nimal Senadheera assumes duties in London
High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom Nimal Senadheera who arrived in London on 14 June 2025, assumed duties at the High Commission on 16 June. High Commissioner-designate Senadheera was received upon arrival at Heathrow Airport by Mr. Gordon Wetherell CMG, Special Representative of the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
In his address to the staff, Mr. Senadheera outlined the Government’s vision for strengthening the Mission’s work, reflecting the aspirations of the people of Sri Lanka and the mandate entrusted to the Government. He called upon the staff to work unitedly to advance Sri Lanka’s interests and to further strengthen Sri Lanka–UK relations. His assumption of duties was marked by the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, followed by the serving of milk rice and other sweetmeats in accordance with Sri Lankan customs.
Following the assumption of duties, High Commissioner-designate Senadheera paid a visit to London Buddhist Vihara where religious observances and chanting of seth pirith was conducted by Venerable Tawalama Bandula Nayaka Thero.
A senior officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS), Mr. Senadheera brings over two decades of experience in public administration, diplomacy, and education. He has previously served in diplomatic capacities at the Sri Lanka High Commission in Pretoria and held senior roles in the Central Provincial Council and the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration. He holds an MSc in Public Policy from the University of Strathclyde, UK, a Master of Public Administration from Flinders University, Australia, and a Master of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. He completed his undergraduate studies reading English, Economics, and Sociology, at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
