Establishing a formal mechanism to enable Sri Lankan citizens living abroad to exercise their voting rights

The Government of Sri Lanka has appointed a committee, with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers, to make recommendations on establishing a formal mechanism to enable Sri Lankan citizens living abroad to exercise their voting rights.

The Committee has commenced its consultative process and is seeking written views and suggestions from key stakeholders, including:
• Sri Lankan citizens residing overseas
• Sri Lankan Missions and Posts abroad
• Civil society organisations
With a view to developing a democratic, transparent, and efficient system, submissions are invited with particular focus on:
• Voter registration
• Election campaigning and advertising
• Voting procedures
• Counting of votes and declaration of results
Sri Lankan citizens living in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as relevant civil society organisations, are kindly encouraged to submit their written views and suggestions on or before 12 February 2026.
