High Commission of Sri Lanka in the UK Hosts Iftar in Collaboration with COSMOS UK
The High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom, in partnership with the Council of Sri Lankan Muslim Organizations UK (COSMOS UK), hosted a special Iftar gathering on 14 March 2025, bringing together members of the Sri Lankan community as well as representatives of the UK Government.
The evening’s programme featured a Qur’an recitation with translation, followed by two moving nasheed performances. Addressing the gathering, the Acting High Commissioner highlighted the rich diversity of the Sri Lankan Muslim community and its deep influence on Sri Lankan culture. She also spoke on the values of Ramadan and the contributions of Islamic civilization to global advancement.
Dr. Wajid Akhter, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, spoke about Sri Lanka’s renewed hopes under the Government and highlighted initiatives such as Clean Sri Lanka. He also emphasized the significance of the British Sri Lankan Muslim community, noting that the British Muslim Society exists to nurture and empower changemakers within it.
Also speaking at the event were Mr. Shakeer Nawas, President of COSMOS UK, and Ash Sheikh Arkam Nooramith, Secretary General of the All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama, who both reflected on the spiritual and communal importance of Ramadan as well as the values of the Sri Lankan Muslim community both in Sri Lanka and in the UK.
The Iftar provided a meaningful platform to celebrate Sri Lanka’s pluralistic heritage, reinforcing the values of inclusivity, compassion, and togetherness.
