High Commission of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom

The State Ministry of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals of Sri Lanka has sought the assistance of well-wishers to obtain donations of vital medical supplies in the attached list.

The High Commission is making arrangements to dispatch such donations to the State Ministry of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals.  While the national carrier SriLankan Airlines has agreed to transport the medical supplies free of cost, handling charges payable to the Cargo handler have to be incurred. In order to avoid multiple payments as handling charges, the High Commission intends to dispatch the donations of the medical supplies as a single consignment.

If Sri Lankan associations or individuals intend to donate medical supplies to the State Ministry of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals through the High Commission, we would appreciate receiving them at the High Commission by Friday, 22nd April 2022.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris met with High Commissioners and Ambassadors of countries in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 7 April, 2022.

The Foreign Minister briefed the envoys on the current situation in Sri Lanka and responses by the Government. This included discussion on political and economic aspects.

Among other matters discussed were reform to the Prevention of Terrorism legislation, constitutional reform and preparation for negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.

The Ambassador of Egypt, Maged Mosleh, speaking on behalf of the envoys, appreciated the opportunity for a candid discussion.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. G. L. Peiris briefed the Diplomatic corps on 6 April, 2022 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In his address, Minister Prof. Peiris stated that the Government of Sri Lanka was fully aware of the severe hardships of the people and its magnitude with the most pressing issues being power cuts, shortage of gas, fuel and essential medicines. The excessive heat which has exacerbated the situation and the negative impact on various industries as a result due to the power cuts were also adding to the woes of the public. He stated that the protests and the demonstrations by the people taking place across the country was an “expression of despair” and they were crying out at a distressing situation. He also stated that 80-85% of those taking part in the protests and demonstrations were neither extremists nor politically motivated and that Article 12 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka guaranteed the right to assembly, freedom of expression. He further stated that the right of the people to protest was an indication of the vibrant democracy prevailing in Sri Lanka. » Read more
